Celebrating a city is also an exercise in reimagining it, rescuing all its most invisible layers, revealing them, and bringing them back to the surface 100 years later.

The artistic programme designed and created specifically by Lavrar o Mar to celebrate the Centenary of Portimão's Elevation to City Status (1924-2024) was born out of a reflection on the city's identity based on its relationship with art. A unique and creative exercise resulted in an artistic programme—made up of several chapters—that seeks to reveal the energies and experiences that the city offers on a daily basis to stimulate a new sense of belonging.

By linking various urban spaces to artistic creation, we have imagined strategies that challenge people to experiences that intensify their connection to the city and its memories. Throughout 2024, we will discover how art can dialogue, modify, and renew a place's identity.

To this end, we have invited Portuguese and foreign thinkers, artists and companies to confront the city and its centenary existence so that they can share their analytical, poetic and dreamlike visions of themes, issues and relationships that populate everyone's lives and days with different audiences.

This is a programme that allows you to live intensely. It is an exciting and entertaining journey through Theatre, Dance, New Circus, Music, Visual Arts, Installations, and Performance between the city of Portimão and its people.

You can participate directly in experiencing this celebration of the city through art, or you can accompany each event, developing a collection of thoughts and perceptions that can lead to a new collective and vital energy. This is what we hope to achieve!
