Open days to the Planet #2

New Bowing House – Centre for Planetary Relations · Odemira

We open the doors and windows of New Bowing House to cook, dance, listen, build, taste, touch, think, shout, and sing.

In a joyful and relaxed atmosphere, we will spend time together. We want everyone to come — from all parts of the world, of all ages, and with all ways of living and thinking about life. We will get to know each other through languages and ideas. In real-time, we will create a choral manifesto with musician Luís Pedro Madeira and everyone present at the House.

Then, the Turakians will arrive with their "K-Barré", a puppet theatre performance filled with ancient and bizarre characters, right at New Bowing House.

And to close this edition of the "Open Days to the Planet", the Indian community invites us to a Bhangra Dance Party— and we will all dance as if we were in Punjab.

Nepalese Cooking Workshop: Momos
At the table in Nepal
With the Didi Bahini group

The kitchen becomes a space for sharing and discovery, where several Nepalese cooks will guide us through the flavours, techniques, and stories of Nepal’s culinary tradition. We will learn how to prepare momos — traditional Nepalese-filled dumplings — in a hands-on experience filled with taste and conviviality. And the next day, during an authentic Asian brunch, we will savour this dish as if it were our own.

Handmade Bookbinding
Sew a Book
With Rita Carrilho

Learning to sew a book is about shaping a unique, personal object. In this workshop, each participant will create their own cover using recycled fruit box cardboard, colourful threads, and a sewing machine. By the end, everyone will take home a handmade notebook — ready to be filled with words, drawings, or ideas.

An introduction to the art of traditional bookbinding — a literal way to open a new chapter in your life.

Introduction to Indian Percussion
Tablas learning
With Inderjeet Singh

Come and place your fingers on the skin of an instrument that resonates like flowing water. The tables are two distinct drums, played with precision and sensitivity: one hand for each drum, each finger with a specific role, and each part of the hand producing unique sounds. The force is subtle yet firm — a dance between rhythm, touch, and intention.

Learning is a long journey, as with any deep art form, but the desire to play is born from the very first contact. An invitation to listen with your hands and to discover the vibrant universe of Indian percussion.

Manifesto choir for the Planet
With Luís Pedro Madeira

A gathering for all voices and all languages. With conductor Luís Pedro Madeira, we will create a manifesto-choir: a collective song, written and composed in real-time, celebrating diversity and the urgent need to be more human.

We will discover words, work on sounds, connect meanings, and create rhythm and heartbeat. A manifesto/song for a planet still waiting for us — for our voices, our urgency, and our human and sonic beauty. For 1 minute of the performance, 45 minutes of creation.
5:30 PM
Object Theatre · Puppetry
K-Barré
Turak Théâtre

A troupe of eccentric characters, in the spirit of a small circus, takes over the grounds of New Bowing House with their “K-barré”: a handmade, festive performance full of visual poetry, music, dance, and surprises. As in all cabarets, the programme is a puzzle that assembles and disassembles itself, bursting with humour, emotion, and fantasy. There’s tango dancing, singing, drawing, film projections — and everything happens before your eyes.

7:00 PM
Bhangra dance

Agricultural workers from the Sikh community of Punjab, now living in Odemira, invite us to celebrate the joy of movement with Bhangra — a traditional Indian dance full of energy, rhythm, and colour. First, they dance for us, and then we all dance together.

An open gathering where roles are exchanged, and the body learns what words cannot express.
