On this day, the culinary book club “Books to Eat” gathers again to cook “Proud Beggars”, the 1955 novel considered Albert Cossery's masterpiece. By his own choice, Gohar, a former professor of Literature and Philosophy, abandons everything to live as a beggar on the streets of Cairo. Through his sharp and ironic gaze, we explore not only the city but also modern society's moral labyrinths and illusions. With a potent mix of irony and insight, “Proud Beggars” challenges the constraints imposed on us since birth and exposes the so-called civilised world as a grand and absurd futility.
Having "cooked" this book, we anticipate the year's final months, with the announcement of our next title, “The Lying Life of Adults” by Elena Ferrante, to be "tasted" in October.
