Algiers, 1938. Meursault, a man in his early thirties, a modest office clerk, attends his mother’s funeral without showing any emotion. The following day, he begins a relationship with Marie, a former colleague, and resumes the ordinary course of his daily life.
This apparent normality is, however, disrupted by the presence of his neighbour Raymond Sintès, who draws him into obscure affairs, leading inexorably to a tragic event on a beach, under a merciless sun.
The Stranger, based on the novel by Albert Camus (Éditions Gallimard, 1942), published in Portugal by Livros do Brasil, offers a profound reflection on the human condition, the absurd, and the relationship between the individual and the world.
In this session, Cristina Robalo-Cordeiro, retired Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra and specialist in French and Francophone literature, is invited to share her perspective on the film, leading a discussion with the audience after the screening.
The Stranger is part of EscolaNova’s cinema cycle, The World’s Room — a meeting place where cinema asserts itself as a tool for reflection and change, curated by Candela Varas.
