For the tenth edition of Open Day to the Planet, New Bowing House welcomes an exhibition from the Guardiões do Mira project, which throughout 2025 and 2026 brought artists closer to the river, the landscape and the people who live in and care for this territory. Four artistic worlds now come together around the Mira, and the whole day unfolds from them.

In the morning, we enter through the kitchen, with a River Cooking laboratory where liquid foods are prepared, tasted and shared. In the afternoon, the exhibition is crossed by four experiences that engage the hands, ears, body and imagination: nature, clay, listening and fiction. We can enter one, move on to another, go back, stay. For young children, a large table at their height brings together activities for touching, drawing and discovering the river as a family.

Exhibition and experiences intertwine throughout the day. The artworks raise questions. What we do seeks other ways of responding to them.

A day to cross from one riverbank to the other.

New Bowing House - Centre for Planetary Relations is a space of shelter, creation and encounter, open to everyone. Created within the scope of the New Bowing project, it is based in Odemira, in the former Students' Centre. It hosts artistic activities that promote dialogue between cultures and the imagination of new ways of living together.

Workshop-laboratory
RIVER COOKING
with Albina Petrolati, Lúcia Costa, Manuel Ruiz, Rekha DC, Roopa Rani and Simi Kaur

Edible stones, seaweed salads, green juices and other ingredients that invite us to think about the river through our mouths.

Throughout the morning, the kitchen becomes a laboratory for preparing, experimenting and tasting. Drawing on different culinary traditions and forms of knowledge, we invent drinks and foods that, throughout the afternoon, bring the colours, shapes, textures and movements of a river to the table.

Throughout the afternoon, we enter the four artistic worlds of the Guardiões do Mira exhibition.
The artworks spread throughout the House, bringing us closer to the river through different materials, gestures and questions. There is time to look, listen and discover what each artist found in the Mira and in the relationships we build with water and the landscape.
The visits take place alongside four experiences. Everyone can make their own way through them: enter one experience, move on to another, return to the exhibition or simply stay.

NATURE experience
A GARDEN IS ALSO A WAY OF ORGANISING NATURE

We choose what grows and where it grows. We cut, plant, tie, redirect. In this experience, one of the House’s garden beds becomes a place to explore the relationships between humans and plants.
Using plants, wood, screws and other materials, we intervene in this small piece of nature and discover how far our desire to transform it can go.

LISTENING experience
SOUND EXPEDITIONS
with Kali Fawaz

There are sounds that live alongside us and that we almost never hear.
The sound of water in the pipes. Footsteps in another room. A vibration, a distant noise, something happening behind a wall or around the House.
We set off on small expeditions to listen to these almost invisible sounds. Another way of discovering Casa Novo Bowing: with our ears wide open.

FICTION experience
ARQUITECIMAGINARY ARCHITECTURES
with Rita Carrilho and Manuel Ruiz

First, we draw a geometric shape. Then we give it volume. What if this architecture were suspended in space? Or underground? Or floating at the bottom of the river?
Stories begin to emerge inside these imaginary constructions. Some may be frightening. Others make us laugh. Underwater vessels, impossible houses or places that do not yet exist.

CLAY Experience
A LANDSCAPE THAT GROWS, CHANGES, COMES APART…
with Mariana Mota

A large amount of clay covers the table. With our hands, we mould, drag, gather and pile up the material until a landscape begins to appear.
Water and stones from the Mira River are added to the clay.
Each person transforms what they find. Throughout the afternoon, the landscape grows, changes, comes apart and takes shape again. A collective construction in constant movement, like the river.

EARLY CHILDHOOD experience
THE RIVER AT CHILDREN’S HEIGHT
with Catarina Inácio and Matilde Tudela

A large table at the height of young children becomes a place for touching, painting, experimenting and discovering.
The ideas running through the exhibition and the day’s experiences arrive here on a smaller scale, to be explored by children at their own pace, with their hands, bodies and imagination.
