Open day to the Planet #11 ATTENTION · ATENÇÃO · AUFMERKSAMKEIT · MAKINI · ध्यान

New Bowing House – Centre for Planetary Relations · Odemira

According to Portuguese choreographer Inês Zinho, the care and attention we give to the world are becoming endangered. Our attention to the things, landscapes, animals and people around us seems to be disappearing.

For this Open Day for the Planet, the New Bowing House presents an afternoon dedicated to small things, gentle gestures and the different ways we can care for what surrounds us.

There are stories to listen to slowly, a puppet made of clay and hands that accidentally loses its ego and arrogance, an orchestra where every sound grows from listening to others, and poems created through many voices. Theatre, music and poetry become ways of discovering what so often goes unnoticed.

Attention can also be practised around the table. Small cooking rituals lead to the preparation of a shared soup, while the flavours of India arrive through rôti, a traditional bread prepared and shared throughout the afternoon. There is also an opportunity to encounter the Sikh tradition, exploring the history, meaning and everyday gestures involved in tying a turban.

A day to discover that caring often begins simply by paying attention.

LITTLE STORIES TO PAY ATTENTION TO
with Silvia Laureano · Livraria Mirabolante

Some stories make us stop and look more closely at the world around us. Stories that draw our attention to small things, unnoticed gestures and everything we so often forget to observe.

Livraria Mirabolante presents short stories about care and attention. Through words and imagination, we discover new ways of looking at others, at nature and at everything we share.

Object Theatre
Ai de mim, ai doeu…
with Sandra Neves · Trupe Fandanga

An ephemeral puppet, made of clay and hands, accidentally finds itself stripped of its ego and arrogance.

Using simple materials and small gestures, Trupe Fandanga creates a world where objects come to life and what seems insignificant takes centre stage. A performance in which one small transformation can change everything.

OBJECT THEATRE WORKSHOP

with Trupe Fandanga

What happens when we look at an ordinary object as if we were seeing it for the first time? What stories can something that usually goes unnoticed tell?

In this workshop, attention turns to seemingly insignificant things. Through imagination and theatre, everyday objects take on new meanings and reveal unexpected possibilities.

THE TINIEST ORCHESTRA
with Alexandre Caetano

An orchestra begins with a sound. Then comes another, listening to the first, and another, responding to what it has just heard. Little by little, a composition emerges from small acts of shared attention.

In this Tiny Orchestra, what matters is not simply making sounds, but noticing what others are doing. Each sound finds its place in relation to the others, in a collective experience where listening is just as important as playing. A necklace of acoustic attentions, gradually unfolding throughout the afternoon.

TRANSCULTURAL SOUND POETRY
with Tiago Schwabl

What if, for one day, we could all become sound poets? What if words could be cut up, mixed, transformed and given new voices?

Read, cut, paste, combine and create a poem made of words and sounds. In this collective experience, different voices come together and contribute to a shared creation.

Because making sound poetry also means learning to listen to words, silences and what others have to say.

CULTIVATING THE COMMON
with Francisca Paiva

A soup can begin with a small gesture. Choosing an ingredient, preparing it with care, adding it to the others and waiting for all the flavours to come together.

Small cooking rituals lead to the preparation of a shared soup. Each person contributes to something that, in the end, belongs to everyone. An exercise in paying attention to food, gestures and the people with whom we share the task of cooking.

Because caring for what we share can also begin in a kitchen, gathered around a pot.
04:00 pm – 06:00 pm
RÔTI RÔTI
with Rupa Rani and Simi Kaur

Making bread can also be a way of discovering a culture, its gestures and the flavours passed down through generations.

Rupa Rani and Simi Kaur demonstrate how to prepare rôti, a traditional Indian flatbread. Everyone will have the opportunity to try making it and then taste it with a selection of sauces.

From preparation to tasting, the kitchen becomes a place of learning and sharing.
06:00 pm
SIKH TURBANS
with Dilbagh Singh Siddhu, Satwant Singh, Palwinder Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Gurjot Singh

A turban is much more than a piece of fabric. In the Sikh religious tradition, which originated in Punjab, India, it is an expression of identity, faith and belonging.

But how is a turban tied? What does it mean? Why does it remain part of so many people's everyday lives?

Members of the Sikh community share the history and meaning of their turbans, demonstrating how they tie them each day and explaining why they continue to wear them. An encounter that brings us closer to this tradition through the gestures and stories of those who live it.
