Open days to the Planet #12 PAPEL · PAPER · PAPIER · KARATASI · कागज़

New Bowing House – Centre for Planetary Relations · Odemira

Christo was a Bulgarian-born visual artist who, rather than revealing a work, concealed it, wrapping it in fabric or other materials. He wrapped enormous buildings, bridges and architectural structures, bringing art into the urban landscape through surprise and transformation. He wanted audiences to look at these buildings differently.

Over these two open days, we will use paper as a way of thinking and creating. We will use paper to explore dreams, build machines that solve problems and write down recipes from Iraq. We will lay the tablecloths, also made of paper, and discover paper as a material responsive to gesture, water and ink made from plants.

On Saturday, many hands will prepare a soup of Iraqi origin, and we will gather around the table for dinner. On Sunday, we will wrap, build and paint with paper, before entering Nico’s dreams in a puppet performance that will touch children and adults alike.

Two days to wrap up some of life’s important things: cooking, drawing, shadows, the future, painting and building.

New Bowing House - Centre for Planetary Relations is a space of shelter, creation and encounter, open to everyone. Created within the scope of the New Bowing project, it is based in Odemira, in the former Students' Centre. It hosts artistic activities that promote dialogue between cultures and the imagination of new ways of living together.

2:00 PM – 7:00 PM
KUBEBA
Middle Eastern Cooking Workshop
with Lior Rachmani and Anat Berman

When we think of Mediterranean cooking, a delicious, comforting soup may not immediately come to mind. Yet a bowl of wonderfully flavourful soup can be a gateway to autumn.

Israeli cuisine is a tapestry of culinary traditions brought together in one place, strongly influenced by the Arab world. From that connection to nature, the seasons and what the land provided came a soup in which little semolina and meat dumplings float in delicious vegetable broths that change with the time of year.

We need many hands to make this soup. It is therefore a family soup, prepared in three flavours — three seasons, if you like.

There will also be a vegetarian version.

KUBEBA
A Dinner from the Middle East
with Lior Rachmani and Anat Berman

Lior Rachmani and Anat Berman are a couple of food entrepreneurs and creators who founded the Pizza ao Domingo project in Aldeia dos Lameiros, São Luiz. Their cooking blends Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences.

The menu, prepared during the cooking workshop held throughout the day at the New Bowing House, features kubeba, a soup of Iraqi origin, alongside salads and dessert.

We will spend time together, share a table, savour food from a faraway country, listen to good music and wash up together.

Detailed programme

15 november · sunday

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
ENCLOSE, PACKAGE, WRAP, REVEAL
with Ana Alvellos

Like the artist Christo, we will wrap objects and more objects, small and large, giving them a new life and perspective. The question we ask is: how can concealing something reveal it, or allow us to see what remains unseen?
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
PAPER MACHINES TO SOLVE PROBLEMS
with Joana Rainha

When everything outside seems hostile, imagining an (im)possible world becomes imperative. What would happen if we could build machines with the power to change the world? What shapes would they take? What problems could they solve?

This is a workshop where we build, with our hands, everything we allow ourselves to dream of. A factory of paper dreams and hope for a world yet to come.
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
PAPER, WATER, MATTER AND POSSIBLE FUTURES
with Thierry Ferreira

An invitation to explore paper as a sensitive territory where gesture, water and ink meet. Through stains, folds, transparencies and dissolving forms, each person seeks to give shape to something they wish for, imagine or cannot yet name.
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
HUMAN/NATURE… ALL DREAMED UP IN PAPER
with Salomé Nascimento

I am the forest, the sea and all the animals on Earth. What is my dream? We will answer through paper constructions, cutting, collage and painting with natural pigments and egg tempera.
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
SANDWICHES, JUICES AND DREAM WRAPPINGS
with Alexandra Neves Silva and Sandra Sanches

Throughout the afternoon, visitors will make their own fruit juices and wonderful sandwiches, choosing whichever combinations they wish and then carefully wrapping their sandwiches in the colourful assortment of papers provided.
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
NICO E OS SONHOS DE PAPEL
Puppetry and animated forms
A performance by Magnum Soares

When everything around her falls apart, she plays. Among forests and wreckage, the child discovers that all she needs to do to travel is close her eyes. While rockets cost millions, her dreams fly for free. In the darkness behind her eyelids, stars light up. Every shadow becomes a planet; every gesture invents a galaxy.

In Nico, puppetry and dance take us on a journey through the invisible space of the imagination, where the universe is not a destination but a refuge for those who allow themselves to dream.
