Takumi and his daughter Hana live modest lives in harmony with nature's cycles in a village near Tokyo. But a project to build a glamping park—luxury camping—threatens to destabilise the community, disrupt the water supply, and upset the lives of the people who live there.
An allegory about the price we pay for disrespecting nature, “Evil does not exist” delivers a familiar message, but one whose impact here is tremendous. Filmmaker Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's sweeping visual language is matched by an irresistibly beautiful soundtrack by Eiko Ishibashi, who worked with Hamaguchi on the Oscar-winning Drive My Car. This film received an eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and won Hamaguchi the Grand Jury Prize, followed by other awards at various festivals.
