After losing his mother in a fire, Mahito, a young boy of 11, is forced to leave the city of Tokyo to return to the village where he grew up. He settles with his father in an old mansion on a vast estate, where he meets a heron who gradually becomes his guide, helping him in his discoveries and questions to understand the world around him and unravel the mysteries of life.
